Sloped ceilings on both sides. Knee walls that break the floor into odd sections. One wall tall enough for a TV, and not much else that behaves. Nothing from a furniture showroom was going to fit.

A blank room with good bones and difficult angles. The low walls under the slopes from the dormers are where most rooms like this lose space, because a standard sofa either floats in the middle or leaves a gap no one can sit in.

We designed the seating around the room instead of forcing a piece into it. The sectional was built to follow the footprint, wrapping the walls and bending where the walls bend. Every seat gets used.
A few other things we love about this room
One color on every surface
Walls and ceiling share the same deep charcoal. When the slopes and flat planes are one color, the eye stops counting angles and the room settles into one enclosed, cozy space. Very good for movie nights.
Pattern where it earns its place
The one full-height wall got the zebra wallpaper, with the TV mounted right on it. It was already the focal point, so it got the boldest move.
Art and pillows carry the color
An ostrich on teal at one end, a hippo on orange at the other. The pillows repeat both: rust velvet, green, and a zigzag weave that pulls the palette together
Some people would have called this an ‘awkward’ space. But…we love it.
With custom pieces, a space like this can become the most personal ones in a house, because nothing in them could have come off a showroom floor. This one went from leftover square footage to the room the whole family ends up in at night.
